Gig workers in Telangana have called off their planned strike after receiving assurances from the state government during discussions held on Friday. The strike, which was set to begin on August 8, was postponed following talks chaired by Telangana Labour Minister G. Vivek Venkatswamy.

During the meeting, the minister addressed concerns raised by worker unions regarding welfare measures, social security, and other pending demands. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding the rights of gig and platform workers and shared that guidelines for the Telangana Gig Workers Welfare Act were being finalized. The Act, aimed at improving the working conditions and social protections for gig workers, is expected to be notified soon.

Minister Venkatswamy urged union representatives to remain patient, assuring them that their demands would be considered sympathetically. "The government is fully committed to protecting the interests of gig workers. We are working towards implementing a comprehensive framework under the Welfare Act," he stated.

The decision to postpone the strike comes as a relief to both workers and businesses in the state, as gig workers play a crucial role in sectors like delivery services, ride-hailing, and other platform-based jobs. The unions had planned the strike to push for better working conditions and social security benefits.

The Telangana government's proactive engagement with worker unions signals a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by gig workers, a growing segment of the workforce in India. The unions have expressed cautious optimism, awaiting the formal rollout of the welfare guidelines.
