Telangana grants Employees Health Care Trust full control over health scheme

The Telangana government has officially empowered the Employees Health Care Trust (EHCT) to oversee the Employees Health Scheme (EHS), which benefits government employees, pensioners, and their dependents. This decision comes after the reconstitution of the Trust’s Board of Trustees, according to an order issued by the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department on Thursday. The revamped Board includes representatives from government employees’ and pensioners’ associations.

New Funding Model to Support EHS

The move follows the recent introduction of a 1.5% contribution to the EHS fund, deducted from the basic pay of active employees and the basic pension of retirees. The government has clarified that the Board will now hold full authority to implement, manage, and operate the scheme, ensuring its smooth functioning.

Strict Oversight of Funds Mandated

The Board has been instructed to strictly adhere to the Trust Deed, rules, and existing guidelines in utilizing EHS funds. These resources are to be used exclusively for the welfare of member employees, pensioners, and their eligible dependents. To facilitate the transition, the Chief Executive Officer of the EHCT has been tasked with taking necessary steps to implement the government’s directive.

This restructuring aims to streamline the administration of healthcare benefits for thousands of state employees and retirees, ensuring greater accountability and efficiency in fund utilization.
