In a significant step towards promoting transparency and empowering artisans, Telangana’s Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district has launched a QR code-based authentication system for handloom products. This initiative, unveiled during National Handloom Day 2026 celebrations in Bhongir, allows consumers to access detailed information about the weaver behind each product by simply scanning a QR code.

A Window Into the Weaver’s World

The QR code system, developed by Jupitex AI, offers more than just proof of authenticity. By scanning the code, buyers can view the weaver’s name, address, geo-tag number, and even technical details about the warp and weft used in crafting the product. This initiative not only ensures the genuineness of handloom items but also gives individual weavers long-overdue recognition and visibility in the market.

A New Era for Pochampally’s Weavers

In addition to the QR code system, a Design Resource Centre is set to be established in Pochampally, a region renowned for its intricate ikat weaving. The centre aims to merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design to help weavers adapt to evolving market trends. The facility will be supported by United Way Hyderabad in collaboration with the Handlooms and Textiles Department of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

Padma Shri awardee Chintakindi Mallesham will mentor the initiative, which will provide weavers with resources such as trend forecasts, archives of traditional patterns, and institutional market linkages. The centre will also offer training in areas like design marking, dyeing, jacquard weaving, and natural dyeing. Special provisions, including Modha pedal machines and training for differently-abled weavers, as well as eye health camps, are also planned to support the weaving community.
