Ajit Doval urges stronger BIMSTEC ties to tackle global challenges

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has stressed the need for enhanced collaboration among BIMSTEC member nations, citing escalating global challenges. Speaking at the BIMSTEC Security Summit held in India, Doval underscored the importance of collective action to address shared concerns in the region.

Global Uncertainty Demands Regional Unity

Doval highlighted pressing global issues, including geopolitical uncertainties, disruptions in global supply chains, and security threats arising from emerging technologies. He urged member states to take decisive steps to safeguard mutual interests in these challenging times.

India's Commitment to BIMSTEC Vision

Reaffirming India's dedication to BIMSTEC, Doval linked the initiative to India's "Neighbourhood First" and "Act East" policies, as well as the "SAGAR" (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. He emphasized that fostering security and development through mutual cooperation is critical for the region's progress.

A Shared Heritage and Strategic Importance

Doval described BIMSTEC as more than a grouping of Bay of Bengal nations, emphasizing its foundation on shared civilizational, cultural, and historical ties. He noted that the bloc has already made significant strides in combating terrorism, transnational organized crime, cyber threats, and maritime security challenges. Such cooperation, he added, benefits all member nations, including India.

Strategic Relevance for India's Northeast and Beyond

BIMSTEC, comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, holds strategic importance for connecting India's northeastern states with neighboring countries. The organization also bolsters India's "Act East" policy, facilitating trade, connectivity, and economic integration across South and Southeast Asia.

A Viable Alternative to SAARC

Doval's remarks also underscored BIMSTEC's role as a viable alternative to SAARC, particularly given Pakistan's absence from the bloc. This enables India to take a more proactive leadership role in the region without external impediments. BIMSTEC is pivotal for India's economic growth, security, and diplomatic outreach.
