Shikanji, ORS in ‘Cooling Centres’: Delhi Government Reaches Out to Parents of NEET Re-Test Candidates
In a bid to support candidates and their families during the NEET-UG 2026 re-test scheduled for June 21, the Delhi government has announced the establishment of “cooling zones” at all 97 examination centres across the city. These zones will offer seating arrangements, clean drinking water, shikanji (a traditional lemon-based drink), Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), tea, first aid, and other essential amenities for parents and family members accompanying the candidates.
The initiative comes after the cancellation of the original NEET-UG exam held on May 3 due to a question paper leak. The re-test has prompted several state governments to introduce measures aimed at reducing the inconvenience faced by candidates and their families.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the challenges parents often face while waiting outside examination centres, including long hours in extreme heat and discomfort. She emphasized that the government’s efforts aim to ensure parents do not face such difficulties on this important day.
Of the 97 examination centres in Delhi, 69 are located in government schools, while the remaining are in Kendriya Vidyalayas. These centres will now feature cooling zones to provide relief from the summer heat.
To further assist candidates, the Delhi government has also announced free travel on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses for students presenting a valid admit card. This measure aligns with similar initiatives by other states, such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Odisha, which have offered free or discounted travel for NEET re-test candidates.
Preparations for the cooling zones are already underway under the supervision of the Divisional Commissioner. The government has installed 85 shade structures across the city, with 15 cooling zones already operational. Additionally, 13 Mobile Heat Relief Units equipped with water, ORS, cotton cloth, caps, and basic medical aid are patrolling the city to provide relief from the heat.
Chief Minister Gupta extended her best wishes to all students appearing for the examination, urging them to approach the test with confidence and dedication, as their success would pave the way for a brighter future for their families, Delhi, and the nation.
