Two snatching accused fire at police in Ghaziabad Indirapuram, both shot in encounter

Two chain-snatching accused opened fire at a police team during an intensive checking drive in Ghaziabad's Indirapuram area on the night of August 15, Independence Day. In retaliatory action, both suspects were shot in the legs and hospitalised.

How did the encounter unfold?

According to video footage from the operation, police had set up checking points in the Indirapuram police station area as part of heightened security on Independence Day night. Two suspects on a motorcycle were spotted approaching from a bridge. When signalled to stop, the duo accelerated and attempted to flee.

The pillion rider opened fire at the police team during the escape attempt. Following standard operating procedure, officers returned fire and shot both accused in the legs. They were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

Who are the accused?

The accused have been identified as Karan alias Kanha and Shahrukh. During interrogation, both confessed to carrying out multiple snatching incidents in the Indirapuram area and across Delhi-NCR.

Karan has over a dozen criminal cases registered against him, while Shahrukh faces six cases of snatching and theft at various police stations.

What was recovered?

Police recovered two live cartridges, two spent cartridge shells, two country-made pistols, a piece of yellow metal (gold), and an unnumbered Passion Pro motorcycle from the accused.

Police statement

Assistant Commissioner of Police Suryabali Maurya confirmed that interrogation of both accused is ongoing. Legal proceedings have been initiated and police are working to ensure strict punishment. He added that the intensive checking drive will continue to curb snatching and robbery in the area.
