A survey reveals 93% of mainland Chinese parents relocate to Hong Kong for better educational opportunities for their children.

93% of mainland Chinese top talent move to Hong Kong for children’s education

A recent survey by Beacon Group, one of Hong Kong’s leading tutoring and college admissions consultancies, has revealed that 93% of mainland Chinese parents who moved to Hong Kong did so primarily for their children’s education and future academic opportunities. The survey, conducted between May and June, gathered online responses from 239 mainland parents who relocated under various talent admission schemes.

The findings highlight that nearly 80% of these parents chose to move when their children were in upper secondary school, a critical stage for preparing for higher education. This underscores the importance these families place on Hong Kong’s education system and its perceived advantages for university admissions and career prospects.

Among the respondents, nearly half entered Hong Kong under the Top Talent Pass Scheme, while others came through the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme. The Top Talent Pass Scheme, introduced in December 2022, offers a fast-track visa for high-earning professionals and graduates from top global universities, without requiring a prior job offer. Most of the surveyed parents hold master’s degrees and have annual household incomes exceeding HK$1 million (US$127,600), reflecting the highly skilled and affluent demographic targeted by these programs.

The survey sheds light on the growing trend of mainland Chinese families prioritizing international-standard education for their children. Hong Kong’s globally recognized education system, combined with its proximity to mainland China, makes it an attractive destination for these families. This influx of talent also aligns with Hong Kong’s broader efforts to attract skilled professionals to boost its economy and global competitiveness.

As education continues to be a driving factor for migration, the findings highlight the role of targeted visa schemes in shaping Hong Kong’s demographic and economic landscape.
