“We can and we must identify and map this threat and rebuild our counterterrorism architecture to defeat it,” Rubio stated, describing left-wing groups as a transnational danger that opposes Western values and targets political figures and infrastructure.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic leaders, who accuse the Trump administration of politicising counterterrorism and diverting resources from other pressing extremist threats.

Critics also warn that designating left-wing organisations as terror groups could lead to the suppression of lawful protests and the targeting of political opponents.
