War Heroes, National Icons to Replace British-Era Names on 21 Roads in Secunderabad Cantonment
In a significant move to shed colonial-era legacies, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has approved the renaming of 21 roads and three bazaars, replacing British-era names with those of Indian war heroes and national icons. The decision was finalized during the Board's meeting on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
SCB Chief Executive Officer Arvind Kumar Dwivedi confirmed the development, stating that the renaming process, including the removal of old signage and installation of the new ones, will be completed within a month.
Among the notable changes, Bolton Road will now be known as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Road, Noble Road will be renamed A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road, and Lytton Road will bear the name of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Potnee Road has been renamed Tarapore Marg in honour of Param Vir Chakra awardee Lt. Col. A.B. Tarapore, while Richardson Road will now be called Unnikrishnan Marg, commemorating Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was martyred during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Wellington Road will take on the name Vikram Batra Marg, paying tribute to the Kargil War hero. Gough Road has been rechristened Somnath Sharma Marg after India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee, and Amherst Road will now be Abdul Hamid Marg in honour of Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, a Param Vir Chakra recipient for his bravery during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. Additionally, Burton Road has been renamed Santosh Babu Road in memory of Colonel B. Santosh Babu, who lost his life in the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.
The changes extend to the bazaar areas as well. Bearers Lines will now be called Kartavya Nagar, 108 Bazar has been renamed Infantry Bazar, and RA Pensioners Lines will be known as Artillery Pensioners Lines.
This initiative reflects a broader effort to honour Indian heroes and national figures while moving away from colonial-era nomenclature.
