Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that traffic congestion in Pune city is set to drop by 30% following the completion of major infrastructure projects, including three elevated highways, the Ring Road, and the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR). Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the elevated highways, Fadnavis outlined the transformative impact these developments would have on urban mobility and connectivity in the region.

Multi-Tier Roads and Metro Integration

The Chief Minister highlighted the modern planning behind the projects, which include four-tier roads in certain areas. These will feature ground-level roads, the Outer Ring Road, elevated corridors, and Metro routes stacked above them. Fadnavis emphasized that integrating Metro infrastructure with road projects could cut construction costs by up to 40%.

Long-Term Vision for Pune’s Growth

Fadnavis projected that by 2030, Pune would emerge as one of India’s most advanced cities. He stressed the importance of these forward-looking projects in making Pune and its surrounding areas a key economic hub. The Hadapsar-Yavat and Chakan-Shikrapur corridors, he noted, would save commuters up to 50 minutes of travel time each way, significantly easing daily traffic woes.

Timeline and Economic Impact

The Ring Roads are slated for completion within two years, while work on the 36-km HCMTR project is scheduled to begin in November. The Hadapsar-Yavat elevated corridor, spanning 31 km, will be the longest continuous elevated road in the country. Additionally, the three elevated road projects are expected to generate ₹1,000 crore in revenue for the state government.

Boost to Regional Economy

Pune and its surrounding areas contribute ₹7.75 lakh crore to Maharashtra’s GDP, underscoring their importance as economic centers. Fadnavis revealed that the proposed Purandar airport could further boost Pune’s GDP by 2-3%. Land acquisition for the airport is progressing, with 91% of farmers consenting to the project and half of the compensation already disbursed. Construction is expected to commence by year-end.

Deputy CM and Union Minister Weigh In

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar described the elevated road projects as “game-changers” for Pune’s traffic situation, crediting former Deputy CM Ajit Pawar for his efforts in advancing these initiatives. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also attended the event, underscoring the significance of these developments for the region.
