NHAI sets May 2027 deadline for Edappally-Kodungalloor six-laning project

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set May 2027 as the deadline to complete the six-laning of the Edappally-Kodungalloor stretch of NH 66, a critical 30-km corridor on the heavily trafficked Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod route.

Delays Prompt Design Changes and Additional Infrastructure

The project has faced setbacks due to delays in sourcing raw materials and public protests demanding better infrastructure, including more underpasses, service roads, and drainage systems to prevent flooding. Responding to these concerns, the NHAI has revised its plans to include five additional underpasses, 5.60 km of service roads, and 4.30 km of viaducts for overbridges.

The viaducts will replace the originally planned soil-filled approaches to bridges, a decision influenced by damage to retention walls observed on similar NH 66 structures across Kerala. The new underpasses will be located at Koonammavu (two), Thaikkavu in Cheranallore, Pattanam, and Perumbadanna.

₹28 Crore Allocated for Drainage and Pedestrian Safety

To address flooding concerns, ₹28 crore will be allocated to local bodies for constructing additional drains along the Edappally-Muthakunnam stretch. Furthermore, the length of flyover-cum-underpasses at Edappally Junction has been extended by 180 metres to accommodate two additional pedestrian underpasses.

Local Leaders Call for Enhanced Connectivity

Shimmy Francis, vice-president of the Cheranallore grama panchayat, has urged the NHAI to improve access for commuters from byroads, which have become less accessible due to the six-lane expansion. He also highlighted the need for vehicle underpasses at the Cheranallore signal junction to ease traffic congestion, as well as the widening of narrow service roads and the addition of bus bays and waiting sheds for passengers. Disputes have stalled service road construction in some areas, further complicating the situation.
