Archaeological heritage of Kasaragod integral to Keralam’s history, says Minister

The State Archaeology department is conducting the Kasaragod Archaeological Survey 2026 to identify and document the district’s historical and archaeological evidence.

Minister for Archaeology, Archives, Museum, O.J. Janeesh inaugurated the survey at NKB Memorial Hall in Nileshwaram.

Survey to document historical evidence

The Minister said Keralam could not have a complete history without including the history of Kasaragod.

He said the comprehensive survey was being conducted as part of the government’s 100-day action programme.

The survey aims to identify, document and systematically record the historical and archaeological evidence within Kasaragod.

The Minister said Kasaragod, known as the ‘Land of Forts’, had historical roots extending back to the stone age.

He also described the district as a place that made visitors reluctant to leave once they arrived.

Megalithic monuments and successive rule

Kasaragod is rich in Megalithic monuments dating from the period following the Stone Age, the Minister said.

He specifically referred to Iron Age laterite caves and umbrella stones in the district.

The Minister said Kasaragod had a long and diverse history shaped by successive periods of rule.

These included the Alupas, local chieftains, the Vijayanagara empire, the Ikkeri Nayakas and European powers.

The survey’s focus on systematically recording this evidence places the district’s archaeological remains within the broader historical record of Keralam, according to the Minister’s remarks.

Sandeep Varier, MLA, presided over the function.

Govindan Pallikappil, MLA, and District Collector Sridhanya Suresh were present.
