Google Bets on Gemini AI to Reinvent the Smart Speaker with New Google Home Device

Google is aiming to redefine the smart speaker market with the integration of its generative AI platform, Gemini. On June 17, the tech giant unveiled the Google Home Speaker, its first standalone smart speaker in nearly six years. Priced at $99.99 (approximately Rs 9,421), this device represents Google’s most significant innovation in smart home technology since the launch of Nest Audio in 2020.

Unlike traditional smart speakers that primarily focus on voice commands, music playback, and smart home controls, the Google Home Speaker is designed as a conversational AI assistant. It leverages Gemini’s natural language capabilities to handle more complex, multi-step requests. This launch is part of Google’s broader strategy to integrate Gemini across its product ecosystem, including smartphones, search, and home devices, as competition in the AI assistant space heats up.

The device enables users to interact more naturally, eliminating the need to memorise specific commands. For instance, users can issue multi-step instructions like dimming lights, starting music, and setting timers in a single sentence. Gemini also allows corrections mid-conversation, making interactions more seamless.

An example of this feature would be a user saying, “Turn off the coffee maker,” and then immediately correcting themselves with, “I mean, turn it on,” without restarting the request. Additionally, the speaker includes a “Continued Conversation” mode that keeps the microphone active briefly after a response, enabling follow-up questions without repeating the “Hey Google” wake phrase.

To enhance user experience, Google has introduced 10 new AI-generated voices for the assistant, making interactions feel more conversational. Beyond managing smart home devices, users can engage Gemini in broader discussions and ask questions on diverse topics, similar to the capabilities offered in the Gemini mobile app. While the speaker retains a familiar rounded design wrapped in 3D-knit fabric, it now includes subtle updates, such as a new ring light at the bottom that signals whether the device is listening, processing, or responding.

The Google Home Speaker will be available globally in Hazel and Porcelain colours, with U.S. buyers also having access to Jade and Berry options. However, not all Gemini features will be free. Google is introducing a Google Home Premium subscription priced at $10 per month or $100 annually, which unlocks advanced AI capabilities.

Premium subscribers will gain access to features like Gemini Live conversations for extended discussions, the ability to analyse footage from Nest cameras, and detailed activity summaries around the home. To encourage adoption, Google is offering six months of Home Premium free with the device, after which users will transition to the paid subscription. This reflects the growing challenge of balancing advanced AI functionalities with the substantial computing resources they require, pushing companies toward subscription models to offset costs.

With the Google Home Speaker, the company hopes Gemini will transform smart speakers from simple voice-controlled gadgets into indispensable AI companions. However, whether consumers are willing to pay for these enhanced capabilities remains a critical question for Google’s latest hardware venture.
