China is actively promoting its artificial intelligence (AI) models in Europe as it seeks to challenge the United States' overwhelming lead in the global AI race. However, the latest data underscores the significant gap between the two tech giants and other nations, raising questions about whether Europe can emerge as a credible third force in AI innovation.

US and China Far Ahead in AI Development

The 2026 Global AI Innovation Index, compiled by China’s Institute of Scientific and Technical Information and Peking University, highlights the stark disparity in AI capabilities. The United States leads with a score of 78.44, followed by China at 60.49. The third-ranked nation, Britain, lags significantly behind at 39.99, with Germany and France trailing further in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Stanford’s 2026 AI Index Report paints a similar picture. The US produced 59 notable AI models last year, nearly double China’s 35. In stark contrast, Europe contributed only two models, underscoring its struggle to compete at the highest level.

Europe’s Role: A Third Pole or a US Ally?
