Ganesh Immersion Processions Fill Hyderabad Roads Around Charminar, Tank Bund

Ganesh immersion processions moved through Hyderabad from morning on Friday, September 25, filling routes near Charminar, Khairatabad, Tank Bund and Hussainsagar with idols, chants, waiting families and food stalls.

Processions pass the 435-year-old Charminar

At the iconic Charminar, Hyderabad appeared to have shifted into a festive rhythm as one Ganesh idol after another passed the 435-year-old historic monument.

The sky moved between overcast and sunny as trucks carrying idols wound through the Old City.

Chants of “Bolo Ganesh Maharaj ki Jai” and “Ganapati Bappa Morya” came both from the trucks and from people standing along the streets.

The immersion processions had been moving through the Old City right from morning, adding to the festive mood around one of Hyderabad’s best-known landmarks.

For hundreds of visitors at Charminar, the day became more than a regular visit to the monument.

Some had come to see Charminar, while others had reached the area mainly to watch the large number of Ganesh idols passing through on their way for immersion.

Near Charminar, one stage was meant for announcements, while another stage at a lower level hosted cultural programmes as processions crossed the area.

The arrangements made the area a viewing point as well as a passage for the idols moving through the Old City.

Visitors find an unexpected spectacle

For some visitors, the processions near Charminar were completely unexpected.

Mukesh Kumar, a tourist from Lucknow who had travelled to Hyderabad for a meeting, said he did not know that Ganesh immersion processions pass near Charminar.

With a flight to catch later in the night, he had decided to use the hours before departure to visit some of Hyderabad’s popular places.

“I have a flight tonight and I checked out from my hotel thinking I will go around popular places in the city and then head to the airport.

Through social media, I knew that the immersion is today but did not know that idols pass by the Charminar also.

I absolutely loved the community vibe here,” he said.

His account showed how the immersion processions turned a tourist stop into a larger public gathering for visitors who had not planned around the route.

Annual wait near Khairatabad and Tank Bund

A few kilometres away from Charminar, the mood around Khairatabad and Tank Bund was different but carried the same sense of wait and cheer.

For some families, waiting to watch the immersion has become an annual custom.

“We come here every year to watch the immersion.

The final day of immersion has become a ritual for us to come along with our children who get to see what Ganesh immersion looks like,” said Priyesh, who had come with his wife and two children.

As the day wore on, the immersion began taking over more of Hyderabad.

Across the city, huge trucks carrying Ganesh idols joined the roads.

Others brought smaller idols in cars and on two-wheelers as they moved towards Hussainsagar for immersion.

The scale of the processions varied from one group to another, but the destination remained the same.

Prasadam stalls along the routes

Along the routes, immersion day was not only about taking idols to the lake.

At several places, organisers had set up stalls beside footpaths and were distributing “prasadam” to anyone willing to stop for a meal.

Volunteers could be seen serving food to strangers as the processions continued through the city.

Near Afzalgunj, Rakesh and his family were among those who had set up one such stall.

“During the festival, we do everything for Lord Ganesh.

Once he leaves, we also do Samaj Seva, which is by feeding people the prasadam,” he said.

The scenes across Charminar, Khairatabad, Tank Bund, Afzalgunj and the routes towards Hussainsagar showed how the final day of immersion combined procession, public viewing, family tradition and community service.
