The case of alleged theft of ₹7 crore from donations at Ayodhya's Ram Mandir has intensified. On Saturday, the temple trust requested Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to initiate an investigation through a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Hours later, a three-member SIT was formed, including Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant (IAS), Kiran S. (IPS, IG Range), and Neel Ratan (Special Secretary, Finance). The SIT is tasked with submitting a preliminary report within 7 days and a final report within 15 days.
Meanwhile, ₹10 lakh was recovered from the home of temple employee Lavkush Mishra (27). The money was hidden in cow dung and boxes. Lavkush's father confirmed the recovery but stated the source of the money remains unclear. Lavkush, who was responsible for counting donations, had been employed at the temple for 4-5 months. His brother-in-law, Anukalp Mishra, who also works at the temple, is currently in police custody along with Lavkush.
Separately, Nripendra Mishra visited Ayodhya for the second time in five days to attend a meeting of the temple construction committee. He stated his visit was focused on construction matters and declined to comment on the donation controversy.
The theft has sparked political reactions, with BJP leader Vinay Katiyar calling it a serious matter and SP leader Pawan Pandey demanding resignations on moral grounds. A PIL seeking a CBI investigation into the case was filed in the Lucknow High Court by local lawyer Mohit Ashok.
