The controversy surrounding alleged theft of ₹7 crore in donations at Ayodhya's Ram Temple continues to escalate. Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand claimed during an event in Etah that theft has been occurring since the time of the temple's foundation stone ceremony. He alleged irregularities in land sales and criticized Champat Rai, the temple trust's general secretary, stating, "Champat means to take and run."
Mahipal Singh, who identifies himself as a former accounts officer at the temple, alleged that theft was a daily occurrence and claimed he had reported it to Champat Rai and another official, Gopal Ji. Singh further stated that he was removed from his position after raising concerns and that CCTV footage from eight months ago was deleted. He accused Rai of mismanagement and suppressing dissent.
BJP leader Vinay Katiyar, who visited Ayodhya, emphasized the need for an investigation to ensure transparency, given the temple's significance to millions of devotees. He stated, "When the matter involves faith and trust of crores of people, transparency is paramount. Investigation will reveal the truth."
Earlier, Samajwadi Party leader Pawan Pandey alleged that theft of ₹5 to ₹7.5 crore had occurred, prompting calls for judicial intervention. Champat Rai had denied the allegations, stating no evidence of wrongdoing had surfaced. Following increased scrutiny, BJP leader Dr. Rajnish Singh wrote to the Prime Minister, requesting a CBI investigation. The Prime Minister's Office has since sought a report from the temple trust.
