Vizhinjam Port Receives Customs Approval for Export-Import Operations

The Vizhinjam International Transshipment Seaport in Kerala has officially been notified as a customs port, enabling it to handle export and import (EXIM) cargo operations. This marks a significant shift for the facility, which has operated solely as an international transshipment hub since its launch in July 2024. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs issued the notification, with EXIM services set to begin on August 18, 2026.

A New Gateway for Trade

This development positions Vizhinjam as a key gateway for India’s global trade, potentially reducing logistics costs and improving supply chain efficiency. The port’s transition to a full-fledged export-import hub is part of Kerala’s 100-day action plan and is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Indian exporters, attract investments, and create jobs in shipping, logistics, and related sectors.

Operational Milestones and Conditions

Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model by the Kerala government and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), Vizhinjam has rapidly emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing container ports. In just 18 months of operations, it has handled 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of container traffic. The customs notification, however, includes specific conditions: the port will only handle the direct movement of fully loaded containers. Loose cargo or shipments requiring de-stuffing or examination at a container freight station (CFS) are not permitted, as no CFS has been designated for the port.

Imported containers must be moved directly to the importer’s premises within 48 hours of landing, while exports will only be accepted in the form of fully loaded containers ready for shipment. This streamlined approach aims to ensure efficient cargo handling and quick turnaround times.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The port’s operational readiness is supported by completed road connectivity for container movement. Additionally, a dedicated rail link is in the pipeline, featuring a 10-km line with a 9-km tunnel connecting Vizhinjam to the Balaramapuram railway line. This infrastructure is expected to further bolster the port’s capacity to handle large-scale EXIM operations.
