VB-G RAM G Scheme Generates Five Lakh Man-Days of Employment Since July

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Eshwar Khandre announced on Monday that the VB-G RAM G employment and livelihood scheme has created five lakh man-days of employment since its launch on July 1. The initiative aims to curb migration by providing work opportunities within villages, particularly in areas severely impacted by deficit rainfall.

Employment Drive Targets Rural Stability

Khandre revealed that the scheme has been instrumental in addressing rural unemployment, with employment provided to all individuals who applied. He set an ambitious target of generating 1.25 crore man-days of work each month, backed by an allocation of ₹2,900 crore for the first quarter. Under the scheme, rural residents holding job cards are entitled to 125 man-days of employment.

The Minister highlighted the scheme's versatility, noting that 318 types of works can be undertaken, with room for further expansion. This approach is designed to address both immediate employment needs and long-term rural development.

Severe Rainfall Deficit Prompts Action

Sixty taluks in Karnataka are experiencing severe rainfall deficits, exacerbating challenges in rural areas. In response, officials have been directed to prioritize drinking water supply and local employment to prevent migration. Revenue Minister G. Parameshwara recently emphasized the need for the scheme to gain traction across the State, as it has only been implemented effectively in five or six districts so far.

Measures to Address Water Scarcity

Khandre also outlined steps to mitigate the drinking water crisis in villages and thandas where surface water sources have dried up and borewells are non-functional. Private borewells are being hired to supply water, and in extreme cases, new borewells are being sunk. Studies are underway to ensure drinking water availability until the next monsoon, should rainfall remain insufficient in the coming months.

To prevent water shortages, ₹117 crore has been released, with administrative approval granted for works worth ₹95 crore. Farmers have been urged to insure their crops as a precaution against unpredictable weather conditions.
