South Korean Graduates Seek Jobs in Japan Amid Local Job Shortage

South Korea saw a significant rise in young professionals seeking employment in Japan, with 2,257 graduates taking jobs there last year—a 47% increase from 2024. This trend highlights Japan's growing appeal as a career destination for South Korean youth facing limited opportunities at home.

A Tale of Two Job Markets

South Korea's job market for fresh graduates remains challenging. Major employers like Samsung prioritize experienced hires, leaving fewer entry-level roles for new talent. Compounding the issue, older workers often stay employed longer, further tightening the job pool.

In contrast, Japan's ageing population has created a demand for young workers. Japanese companies are actively recruiting fresh graduates to fill positions in structured training programs designed to support early-career professionals.

Bridging the Gap

Recognizing this mismatch, several initiatives have emerged to connect South Korean jobseekers with Japanese employers. KOREC, a start-up founded in 2019, has been at the forefront of this effort. Its founder noted that many South Korean graduates are highly skilled and fluent in Japanese, making them strong candidates for roles in Japan. "I was surprised that they couldn’t find a job because they were so smart," she said during a recent job fair in Seoul.

The demand has also spurred new players in the recruitment space. South Korea’s Wanted Lab and Japan’s LAPRAS launched services this year to match tech talent between the two countries, joining established firms like Mynavi.

This growing migration underscores a stark contrast between the two nations' labor markets. While South Korea struggles with youth unemployment, Japan's ageing workforce creates opportunities for foreign talent. The trend not only offers a lifeline for South Korean graduates but also helps Japanese companies address their labor shortages.

As cross-border recruitment efforts expand, this dynamic could reshape career trajectories for South Korea's youth and provide a model for addressing demographic and economic challenges in the region.
