Uttar Pradesh promotes traditional pottery with awareness program in Unnao

A one-day awareness program on traditional pottery, organized as part of the Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board’s ninth foundation fortnight, was held in Loknagar, Unnao. The event saw enthusiastic participation from artisans, community leaders, and government officials, with Sadar MLA Pankaj Gupta as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Gupta emphasized the importance of pottery as both a cultural heritage and a sustainable livelihood opportunity. He urged artisans, particularly women and members of the Prajapati community, to leverage government schemes to modernize their craft and expand their businesses.

Highlighting the state government’s commitment to promoting traditional industries, Gupta mentioned ongoing initiatives to provide training, financial aid, and advanced tools to pottery artisans. He encouraged attendees to connect with relevant departments to access these benefits and bring their products to wider markets.

Assistant Professor Jiat Bali Yadav from Kanpur University’s Fine Arts and Sculpture Department shared technical insights into pottery-making. He stressed the need to adopt modern techniques and innovative designs to enhance product quality and market demand. Yadav also encouraged young people to explore pottery as a viable self-employment option through specialized training.

District Village Industries Officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh detailed various schemes run by the Mati Kala Board, including loan programs, tool kit distribution, and training initiatives. Singh reiterated the government’s goal of economically empowering traditional artisans and giving their products broader recognition.

The event featured an exhibition of artistic pottery creations by local artisans, which received widespread appreciation from attendees. A total of 165 artisans registered during the program, marking significant interest and engagement.

Prominent figures such as social worker Vimal Dwivedi, councilor Brajesh Pandey, and several departmental officials were present. The program aimed to revitalize traditional pottery, connect artisans to government support systems, and foster self-reliance within the community.
