Turkey Becomes ASEAN Dialogue Partner, Enhancing Global Geopolitical Role

Turkey’s elevation to dialogue partner status within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on July 21 signals its ambition to solidify its role as a middle power in global geopolitics. This development breaks ASEAN's moratorium on new dialogue partners, which had been in place since the UK joined the bloc in 2021. Turkey now joins major powers like the US, China, Russia, and Britain in holding this status.

Strengthening Economic and Political Ties

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted the significance of the upgrade in a social media post, noting that Ankara has steadily deepened its cooperation with ASEAN since establishing institutional ties in 2010. Over this period, Turkey's trade volume with ASEAN countries has surged from US$6.5 billion to US$16 billion. Fidan expressed optimism about further strengthening political and economic collaboration with the region, which boasts a combined population of 700 million and an economy exceeding US$4 trillion.

A Decade of Engagement with ASEAN

Turkey’s relationship with ASEAN began with the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2010, laying the groundwork for closer ties. In 2017, it was granted sectoral dialogue partner status, a stepping stone to its current position. Turkey has cultivated strong trade relations with key ASEAN members, including Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore. Malaysia, in particular, plays a pivotal role as the coordinator for ASEAN-Turkey relations.

Turkey’s upgraded status reflects its strategic pivot toward Southeast Asia, a region of growing economic and geopolitical importance. By aligning more closely with ASEAN, Turkey aims to diversify its partnerships beyond traditional allies in Europe and the Middle East. The move also underscores ASEAN's openness to engaging with non-regional actors who can contribute to its economic and diplomatic goals.
