Trump's Iran Deal Faces Skepticism Over Durability and Clarity
Trump claims a diplomatic victory with Iran, but analysts doubt the deal's clarity and long-term viability. What lies ahead?
Despite Trump’s Promise of Iran Peace, Analysts Say Vague Deal Wobbly at Best
US President Donald Trump has hailed a recent accord with Iran as a significant diplomatic victory, though experts remain skeptical about its durability and clarity. Trump warned Tehran of severe consequences if it fails to comply with the agreement, stating, “When I say permanent, it should be permanent. But if it’s not permanent, they will be bombed.”
The agreement, outlined in a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU), was announced on Sunday, with its terms made public on Wednesday. Trump revealed that he had delivered a stark ultimatum to Iranian negotiators, saying, “I told them, ‘if you don’t adhere to that agreement, we’re going to bomb the hell out of you.’”
Key provisions of the deal include the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, as well as the lifting of dual blockades. Additionally, Iran has agreed to relinquish any claims to impose tolls, while efforts will be made to return at least US$300 billion in seized funds to Tehran.
While the agreement promises significant steps toward de-escalation, questions remain about its enforceability and long-term impact, leaving analysts uncertain about its potential to deliver lasting peace.
