Trump Eases Russian Diesel Sanctions, Potentially Giving India Leverage: Analysts
Eased US sanctions on Russian diesel exports could give India leverage in talks with Washington over discounted Russian crude purchases.
India to gain? Trump’s Russian diesel deal offers New Delhi leverage
US President Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports and allow fresh supplies to reach global markets could give India greater leverage in its dispute with Washington over discounted crude purchases, analysts said.
The move marks a climbdown in US pressure over Russian fuel and may weaken the sanctions argument that Washington has used in dealing with countries buying Russian energy.
Deal opens a diplomatic window
Under the deal Trump announced on Friday, Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the US and global markets.
That supply would be followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and 1 million tonnes “immediately thereafter”.
Trump said a further 3 million tonnes would follow “within a short period of time”, subject to the condition of Russian refineries.
The US Treasury has also issued a temporary licence easing sanctions on Russian diesel shipments.
For New Delhi, analysts said, the development matters beyond the immediate energy dispute.
They said India could use the move to press Washington for more consistent treatment over its own purchases of discounted Russian crude.
The change could also give New Delhi additional diplomatic space as it continues efforts to help negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Analysts said the decision may therefore create opportunities for India on two fronts: seeking greater consistency from Washington and building on its efforts related to the conflict.
The scale of the announced diesel supplies also places the sanctions easing in a wider global-market context, rather than limiting it to a bilateral US-Russia arrangement.
The temporary nature of the Treasury licence, along with the condition of Russian refineries, remains part of the framework described for the shipments.
