Tirupati Launches Flood-Proofing Initiative Ahead of Monsoon Season

In a decisive move to protect Tirupati from flooding, the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) and Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) have initiated a comprehensive flood-proofing project for the temple city. The effort comes in anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season, aiming to prevent a repeat of the devastating inundation witnessed in 2021 when heavy rains on Tirumala hills left the city submerged due to blocked or encroached drainage channels.

Inspection of Key Waterways Under ‘City of Tanks and Lakes’ Project

The flood-proofing measures are part of the ambitious ‘City of Tanks and Lakes’ project, originally envisioned by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. On Friday, TUDA Chairman C. Divakar Reddy and TMC Commissioner Sarada Devi led a joint inspection of two critical water sources—Kapila Theertham and Malvadigundam waterfalls—which channel water from Tirumala into the city during heavy rains.

At Kapila Theertham, the team proposed a hydrological assessment to measure peak flow, duration, and water availability. They suggested constructing a storage pond to utilize surplus water for groundwater recharge. Similarly, at Malvadigundam, they examined the hydrogeological profile and identified a 150-200 metre stretch downstream of Divyaramam urban park as suitable for enhancing recharge potential.

Plans for Aquifer Recharge and Urban Park Development

Further measures discussed include building deep aquifer recharge structures upstream of existing check dams at Malvadigundam. The team also proposed developing vegetation and walking tracks in the urban park to enhance its utility and environmental value. TUDA Secretary N.V. Sreekanth Babu and Water Resources Department Superintending Engineer P. Venkateswara Prasad were present during the inspection.
