Sahasra Ghatabhishekam Held at Srisailam Temple for Rainfall Blessings

In a significant religious observance, the Sahasra Ghatabhishekam of Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy was performed on Monday at the Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy temple in Srisailam. This marked the fourth day of the ongoing five-day Varuna Yagam Sahitha Sahasra Ghatabhishekam, a ritual aimed at invoking divine blessings for timely and adequate rainfall. The event is being organised by the temple's Devasthanam authorities.

Sacred Waters and Traditional Rituals

The day’s ceremonies began with special rituals attended by Endowments Department Additional Commissioner S S Chandrashekhara Azad, Trust Board Chairman Pothugunta Ramesh Naidu, and Executive Officer M Srinivasa Rao. Temple priests performed the Abhishekam using sacred waters drawn from the Krishna River and the Mallikagunda, a holy water source within the temple premises.

A team of 36 ritviks, along with temple priests and Vedic scholars, played a central role in the rituals. They conducted a ceremonial gathering of water from the Krishna River at Pathalaganga, carrying it back to the temple in Kalashams (sacred vessels). Accompanied by traditional music and Vedic chanting, the priests carried the vessels on their heads to the Nandi temple.

Rituals for Deities Across the Temple Complex

The ceremonial water was first used for Abhishekam and other rituals dedicated to Lord Nandishwara, followed by offerings to the village deity Goddess Ankalamma and the guardian deity Lord Veerabhadraswamy. The water was then taken to the Akka Mahadevi Alankara Mandapam within the temple complex, where the Sahasra Ghatabhishekam of Lord Mallikarjuna was performed. The ritual bathing, conducted with a thousand pots of water, was accompanied by the chanting of Rudra mantras.

Special Arrangements for the Deity

To ensure the sanctity of the ritual, a temporary three-foot wall was erected at the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum. This arrangement allowed the deity to remain immersed in the holy waters throughout the day. Following the Ghatabhishekam, additional ceremonies, including Mahanivedana, Neerajana, and Mantrapushpa, are scheduled to be performed.

The Sahasra Ghatabhishekam, a deeply symbolic and elaborate ritual, underscores the temple’s role as a spiritual hub and its connection to agricultural prosperity through prayers for rainfall.
