R.P. Sisodiya highlights disaster prediction's role in saving lives

Mangalagiri: Special Chief Secretary for Industries and Commerce (Handlooms and Textiles), R.P. Sisodiya, has emphasised that precise disaster prediction is the cornerstone of effective disaster management. Addressing Probationary Deputy Collectors at the Andhra Pradesh Human Resource Development Institute (APHRDI) on Monday, he highlighted its critical role in saving lives and minimising damage during emergencies.

Preparedness as Crucial as Response

Speaking during a lecture on disaster preparedness and response, Sisodiya explained how forecasting the timing, intensity, and duration of disasters allows authorities to plan manpower, equipment, and essential resources well in advance. He stressed that disaster management should not be limited to emergency response but must equally focus on preparedness. Early warning systems and effective communication, he noted, are essential for ensuring safe evacuation of vulnerable communities.

Technology and Coordination: The Way Forward

Sisodiya also underscored the importance of coordinated efforts among the Centre, state governments, district administrations, and line departments during emergencies. He advocated for leveraging modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), satellite monitoring, advanced telecommunications, and drones for disaster prediction, real-time monitoring, damage assessment, and relief operations.

Drawing on Andhra Pradesh's experience in managing cyclones, floods, and droughts—including the recent Vijayawada floods and Godavari Pushkaram—Sisodiya highlighted meticulous planning and resource management as key factors in effective disaster response.

The lecture was part of APHRDI's 12-week induction programme for eight Probationary Deputy Collectors, aimed at equipping them with essential skills for public service. Sisodiya's insights offered valuable guidance on disaster management strategies, reinforcing the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of natural calamities.
