Kerala's unique Malayalam calendar revives Vattezhuthu script and culture

The Gramika E.K. Divakaran Potti Memorial Library in Thrissur has unveiled a unique Malayalam calendar for Kollavarsham 1202, blending Kerala’s cultural heritage with its traditional timekeeping system. The calendar, released on August 16, features dates printed in the ancient Vattezhuthu script, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s linguistic history.

A Cultural Archive in Calendar Form

More than just a tool to track days, the calendar doubles as a compact cultural repository. It showcases photographs of 116 eminent figures, including freedom fighters, social reformers, writers, and artists. Additionally, it marks the remembrance days of 317 personalities and other significant historical and commemorative events.

The calendar also incorporates the Preamble to the Constitution of India, accompanied by images of its architects, further enriching its historical and educational value. Covering the Malayalam year from Chingam 1 (August 17, 2026) to Karkidakam 31 (August 16, 2027), it includes corresponding Arabic numerals and Gregorian dates, ensuring usability for a wider audience.

Preserving Kerala’s Traditional Timekeeping

For Gramika, the initiative is a deliberate effort to preserve and promote Kollavarsham, Kerala’s traditional calendar system, in contemporary life. Poet Balakrishnan Anchath officially launched the calendar by presenting a copy to writer Valsalan Vathussery during a ceremony presided over by Gramika president P.K. Kittan.

A Monthly Tribute to Heritage

By integrating traditional script, historical milestones, literary contributions, artistic achievements, and constitutional values, the calendar aims to make every month a celebration of the people and ideas that have shaped Kerala and India. This thoughtful design seeks to ensure that the state’s rich heritage continues to resonate with future generations.
