Kerala's 250 MW Battery Energy Storage System Gets Green Light

Kerala is set to take a major step towards renewable energy integration with the approval of a 250 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Brahmapuram, Ernakulam. The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has cleared the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) proposal for the project, which will be established at the 220 kW substation premises. The facility will be developed using viability gap funding under the central government’s Power System Development Fund (PSDF).

The project has been awarded to Shreyas Sortex Industries Pvt Ltd, which quoted an L1 tariff of ₹1,81,000 per MW per month. KSERC has asked KSEB to expedite the commissioning process, even suggesting incentives for early completion. As per the current timeline, the project is expected to be operational within 18 months. Once functional, KSEB will supply the electricity needed to charge the BESS throughout the 15-year agreement period.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are considered crucial for stabilizing power grids and integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind. The Union Ministry of Power had issued guidelines in 2022 emphasizing the importance of BESS in generation, transmission, distribution, and ancillary services. These systems help store excess renewable energy and release it during peak demand, ensuring a reliable and stable power supply.

The Brahmapuram project is expected to significantly enhance Kerala’s ability to manage renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional power sources. With renewable energy playing an increasingly important role in India’s energy transition, such projects are key to meeting the country’s ambitious sustainability goals.
