Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan to Present First Budget Amid Financial Struggles

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is set to present his government's first budget in the state assembly today. This budget holds significant importance as it will serve as the inaugural financial document of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government, which assumed power in May 2026. The budget is expected to outline the state's economic direction and development priorities.

The Chief Minister has already indicated that Kerala is grappling with serious financial challenges. With limited resources at its disposal, the government will need to identify additional revenue sources to sustain its development initiatives. Satheesan has also clarified that this will be a revised budget, requiring decisions that align with the current financial realities.

According to a recently presented financial white paper in the assembly, Kerala's total liabilities have reached approximately ₹5.07 lakh crore, accounting for around 35.5% of the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). The government acknowledges that maintaining fiscal discipline while balancing development and welfare programs will be its biggest challenge. Experts anticipate that the budget will focus on areas such as social security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, job creation, and women's economic empowerment.

In recent statements, the Chief Minister has emphasized prioritizing initiatives related to women's entrepreneurship and social welfare. Politically, this budget is seen as a critical opportunity for the new UDF government to present its economic vision and governance model to the public. Following the budget presentation, attention will be on the allocations, new announcements, and tax-related proposals for various sectors.

Notably, Chief Minister Satheesan, who also holds the finance portfolio, will personally present the budget. This document is expected to set the tone for Kerala's economic policies in the coming years. The UDF government, led by the Congress party, came to power following a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections.
