K Laltluangkima Elected as Mizoram's Rajya Sabha Representative

K. Laltluangkima, the official spokesperson of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), has been elected as Mizoram’s sole representative in the Rajya Sabha. He secured 26 out of the 36 votes cast in the state Assembly election held on Thursday, defeating Zothansangi Hmar of the Mizo National Front (MNF) by a margin of 16 votes. Laltluangkima will succeed outgoing MNF MP K. Vanlalvena in the Upper House of Parliament.

The ZPM, which holds a majority in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly with 27 legislators, demonstrated its dominance in the election. However, the voting process saw abstentions from two BJP MLAs and one Congress MLA. Additionally, ZPM MLA W. Chhuanawma was unable to cast his vote due to prolonged illness. Despite an appeal to state election officials for home voting, the request was declined.

In a statement issued by the ZPM, Laltluangkima outlined his priorities for his term, emphasizing food self-sufficiency, state border security, and regional stability. Chief Minister Lalduhoma dismissed opposition claims of disunity within the party, stating that the election results would speak for themselves.

With his election, Laltluangkima continues to solidify his position as a prominent political figure in Mizoram. His victory marks a significant milestone for the ruling ZPM party as it strengthens its representation at the national level.
