CPI(M)'s S.B. Raju Elected as Palakkad District Panchayat President

S.B. Raju of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has been elected as the president of the Palakkad district panchayat in Kerala. The election took place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, following the resignation of T.M. Shashi, who vacated the post after being elected as an MLA from the Alathur constituency.

Out of 31 district panchayat members, 29 participated in the voting process. The Pallassana division seat remains vacant due to the pending by-election after Mr. Shashi’s Assembly win. Additionally, one member from the Ambalappara division abstained from voting, citing personal family reasons. Mr. Raju secured 17 votes, defeating United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate T.K. Sunil of the Congress party, who garnered 12 votes. T.K. Sunil represents the Kappur division. District Collector K. Sudheer oversaw the election as the returning officer.

After assuming office, Mr. Raju expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with all members, regardless of political affiliations, to promote the district’s development. He acknowledged the financial constraints faced by the panchayat but assured that development projects would be prioritized and implemented effectively.

The election marks a significant transition in the district’s leadership, with Mr. Raju stepping into the role at a time when resource allocation and project execution remain key challenges. His promise to focus on cooperation and prioritization will be closely watched as he begins his tenure.
