India installs first steel subway at Surat's Udhna railway station

In a groundbreaking development for passenger safety, India’s first steel pedestrian subway has been installed at Surat’s Udhna railway station. The innovative project, completed within a record eight hours on Friday, aims to reduce accidents caused by passengers crossing tracks at the busy station, which sees a daily footfall of around 10,000 people. The subway was constructed using the ‘track cut-and-cover’ method, a time-efficient approach that avoids prolonged disruption to train operations.

Addressing a Critical Safety Concern

The new subway is part of a pilot project by the Railways to tackle the dangers of at-grade crossings, especially at locations with curved tracks and limited visibility. Udhna station, a key transit point for migrant workers in Surat’s textile industry, has witnessed an alarming increase in footfall during peak vacation periods and crises such as the recent LPG shortage, which saw foot traffic triple between March and May. Many passengers resort to crossing tracks to move between platforms, a practice that has led to frequent accidents.

Innovative Construction Method

The steel subway, measuring 12 meters in length, 4.8 meters in width, and 2.7 meters in height, was installed by Larsen & Toubro under the supervision of Western Railway officials. The process involved cutting the tracks, excavating the earth to create a pit, and inserting a pre-fabricated steel arch structure. The tracks were then refitted, and the pit was covered with mud, restoring the railway line to operational status. This method significantly reduces the time required compared to traditional Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) tunnels, ensuring minimal disruption to train schedules.

Future Implications

Western Railway officials believe this technology could be replicated at other busy railway stations and high-traffic rail sections across the country. By eliminating hazardous at-grade crossings, the steel subway promises to enhance passenger safety and streamline foot traffic at congested stations. The success of this pilot project at Udhna station marks a significant milestone in railway infrastructure development.

This innovative approach not only addresses a long-standing safety issue but also demonstrates the potential for modern engineering solutions to transform public infrastructure in India.
