India Secures 5th Spot Globally with 52 Universities in QS World Rankings 2026

India has emerged as the fifth most represented country in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with 52 institutions making it to the prestigious list. This marks a significant milestone for the country, which has seen rapid growth in its higher education sector over the past decade.

The rankings, which evaluate over 1,500 institutions across 106 countries, continue to be led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Stanford University and Imperial College London in joint second place. While the list remains dominated by universities from the United States and the United Kingdom, Asian institutions, including those from India, have shown notable progress.

Among Indian universities, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi retained its position as the nation’s top-ranked institution, climbing to 118th globally. This matches the best-ever global rank achieved by an Indian university. Other Indian institutions in the top tier include IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), underscoring the dominance of IITs and leading public institutions in the rankings.

India’s rise in the rankings is not limited to its premier IITs. The country’s representation has grown from just 14 institutions in 2017 to 52 in 2026, reflecting a remarkable 271 percent increase—making it the fastest proportional growth among G20 nations. Notably, more than half of the ranked Indian universities (52 percent) improved their positions this year, and 18 achieved their highest-ever rankings.

The rankings also highlight India’s growing strength in research and employability metrics. Eleven Indian universities are among the world’s top 100 for Citations per Faculty, while six institutions rank in the top 100 globally for Employer Reputation. This progress comes as India now boasts the world’s third-largest research output base, driven by its expanding higher education participation and a large youth population.

In contrast to several established higher education systems, India has shown one of the strongest improvement rates. While the majority of US and German institutions recorded declines this year, 26 Indian universities improved their rankings, nine maintained their positions, 15 saw declines, and two entered the rankings for the first time.

India’s growing presence in the QS World University Rankings reflects a transformative decade for its higher education landscape, positioning the country as a rising global player in academia and research.
