IIT Kharagpur climbs to 205 in QS World University Rankings 2027, while Jadavpur and Calcutta Universities slip in rankings.
Kolkata: IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University (JU), and Calcutta University (CU) are the only three higher education institutions from West Bengal to feature in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The nationwide list includes 52 universities from India.
IIT Kharagpur has shown significant improvement, climbing 10 spots from last year’s rank of 215 to secure the 205th position globally. Among all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), it now ranks fourth. In contrast, Jadavpur University and Calcutta University have seen a decline in their standings. JU has dropped to the 721-730 band, down from last year’s rank of 676, while CU now ranks in the 901-950 band, a fall from its previous position in the 771-780 range.
Commenting on the achievement, IIT Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty stated, “Entering our platinum jubilee year, IIT Kharagpur is evolving from India’s first IIT into a globally networked institute, shaping the future through frontier research, deep-tech innovation, and societal impact.” He emphasized the institution's broader goals, saying, “Our focus is not only on climbing up in the rankings but also on creating a new benchmark for what a world-class university from the Global South can achieve.”
