Goethe-Zentrum opens new examination centre in Kozhikode for German certification

Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum has inaugurated a new Goethe Examination Centre in Kozhikode, marking its expansion into north Kerala. The facility, located at TT Avenue in Govindapuram, will conduct its first Goethe Certificate Examinations on August 19 and plans to hold monthly assessments thereafter. This development aims to address the growing demand for German language certification among students and professionals in the Malabar region.

A Relief for North Kerala Candidates

The new centre brings significant relief to candidates from Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Kasaragod, and nearby districts, who previously had to travel long distances to access Goethe-Zertifikat examinations. These certifications, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), are internationally recognised and essential for those pursuing academic and professional opportunities in Germany.

Responding to Surging Interest in German

Alexandra Mittler, Director of Language Programmes for South Asia at the Goethe-Institut, highlighted the surging interest in the German language among young people in north Kerala. “For many of them, Germany is opening doors to new academic and professional opportunities... The new Goethe Examination Centre in Calicut is our response to this growing demand,” she said during a media interaction in Kozhikode on August 17.

This expansion comes at a time when a growing number of students and professionals from the region are seeking higher education and vocational training opportunities in Germany.

Beyond Language Certification: A Cultural Vision

The initiative is not limited to language testing. Syed Ibrahim, Director of Goethe-Zentrum Keralam, emphasised the organisation’s broader vision for fostering Indo-German cultural exchange in north Kerala. “Our vision for Kozhikode goes much beyond examinations. Goethe-Zentrum would like to develop a sustained presence in north Kerala and create opportunities for people here to experience contemporary German culture,” he said.

Future plans include hosting German film screenings, music and performing arts programmes, literary events, and workshops, as well as collaborating with local universities and educational institutions. These efforts aim to establish a long-term cultural footprint in the region.

Building on over two decades of educational and cultural work in Kerala, the new Kozhikode centre represents a significant milestone for Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum.
