Four 'Namo Cities' are set to be developed in the National Capital Region (NCR), with one city planned in each of the four states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The selection of these cities will be based on a competitive process. The Ministry of Urban Affairs has allocated ₹5,000 crore for this project over the next five years. This decision was made during the 42nd meeting of the NCR Planning Board held on Tuesday.
During the meeting, proposals for the Regional Plan-2041 were discussed in the presence of the Chief Ministers of Delhi and Haryana. Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar confirmed that there will be no changes to the boundaries of the NCR. He explained that the proposal aims to address issues where restrictions are applied in remote areas unnecessarily.
In Delhi, three potential locations—Narela-Bawana, Dwarka Phase-2, and Alipur-Burari—have been shortlisted for the development of a pollution-free and smart 'Namo City.' The final location will be selected after technical, geographical, and connectivity assessments by the central government. The proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Urban Development after approval from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu.
The proposed 'Namo Cities' will be designed as green and smart urban areas. Features include extensive green belts, the use of electric vehicles and bicycles, 24-hour electricity and water supply, underground utility lines, and smart waste management systems. Residential areas will be located near offices and commercial centers to reduce traffic and pollution.
