Uttar Pradesh launches Jal Sarathi app for tracking rural water projects

In a bid to enhance transparency and citizen engagement, the Uttar Pradesh government has intensified efforts to digitally track rural water supply projects using the Jal Sarathi application. Officials revealed that the app, launched in May 2026, has already garnered over 1.2 lakh downloads within days of its debut and aims to surpass five million downloads in the near future.

Real-Time Access to Water Scheme Data

The Jal Sarathi app provides users with comprehensive village-level data on drinking water schemes, household tap connections, infrastructure status, and implementation progress. Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) and the State Water and Sanitation Mission, the app consolidates information from the Jal Jeevan Mission onto a single digital platform. This makes it easier for citizens, gram panchayat representatives, and officials to access the same information, reducing information gaps and fostering greater accountability.

Transparency and Accountability in Governance

Raj Shekhar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural), highlighted the app’s role in transforming governance. “Traditionally, information about government infrastructure projects remained confined to departmental records. Jal Sarathi changes that by allowing any resident to check the status of water supply schemes in their own village. For rural households, this reduces uncertainty and improves confidence in public infrastructure programmes,” he said.

The app’s bilingual interface (Hindi and English), along with its user-friendly search and selection features, makes it accessible to a wider audience. Data is organized across three levels—state, district, and village—ensuring granular insights for both citizens and administrators.

Strengthening Monitoring Mechanisms

Shekhar also emphasized the importance of robust monitoring for large-scale infrastructure projects. Jal Sarathi introduces real-time tracking, geo-tagged assets, and transparent reporting, enabling administrators to identify bottlenecks, prioritize interventions, and improve service delivery. “Digital platforms like Jal Sarathi complement physical infrastructure by ensuring timely execution and quality outcomes,” he added.

National Recognition and Future Goals

The Government of India has lauded the app for its innovative features and the transparency it promotes. As governance increasingly shifts towards data-driven models, platforms like Jal Sarathi are becoming indispensable tools for improving efficiency and accountability in public service delivery.

With millions of rural households depending on reliable water infrastructure, the Jal Sarathi app represents a significant step toward citizen-centric governance in Uttar Pradesh. Its widespread adoption could serve as a model for other states aiming to integrate technology into public administration.
