BRS Alleges Congress Government Left Kaleshwaram Water Unused Amid Shortage
BRS leader T. Jeevan Reddy says Telangana could have eased irrigation and drinking water shortages by repairing Kaleshwaram barrages.
BRS general secretary and former Minister T. Jeevan Reddy alleged that Telangana’s Congress government had left available Kaleshwaram water unused by not carrying out minor repairs on the project’s barrages.
BRS says repairs could have enabled water lifting
Mr. Jeevan Reddy said the government had failed to take up even small repairs on the three Kaleshwaram Project barrages to lift back water.
He linked the failure to irrigation and drinking water stress in what he described as an El Nino impacted year.
According to him, farmers and the general public are facing a shortage of water for irrigation and domestic needs.
He alleged that this suffering was continuing despite the government having an opportunity to provide water by lifting it from the Kaleshwaram barrages after taking up minor repairs.
Mr. Jeevan Reddy also said more than 1,100 tmc ft of water had gone into the sea as surplus.
Low storage in reservoirs cited
He said Telangana has an opportunity this year to avail water because most reservoirs have low storage.
He also referred to infrastructure developed by the previous government to pump back water into the Sriramsagar project.
According to Mr. Jeevan Reddy, Sriramsagar project now has water only half its capacity.
He reminded that the National Dam Safety Authority had given a free hand to the State government to take a decision on water lifting from the Kaleshwaram barrages.
Medigadda damage and cost claim
Turning to Medigadda barrage, Mr. Jeevan Reddy said that even by the Congress account of ₹1 lakh crore spent on the Kaleshwaram project, the barrage value would be ₹4,000 crore.
He said the value of the seventh block would come to ₹600 crore.
He claimed the damaged portion would cost only ₹200 crore.
Mr. Jeevan Reddy alleged that the government could have brought the damaged portion back into use by sparing that amount and avoided drought conditions.
