Arattavadi Residents Block Inspection Of Proposed Tasmac Relocation Site
Residents in Arattavadi blocked officials from inspecting a proposed Tasmac relocation site, citing road safety, traffic and commuter concerns.
Residents of Arattavadi village protested on Wednesday against a newly identified site for relocating a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) outlet from neighbouring Thanda village.
The protest began after residents learnt that efforts were under way to identify land in Arattavadi for shifting the outlet from Thanda.
Residents said Arattavadi had been home to a Tasmac outlet for many years, and opposed the move to bring another outlet to the identified location.
They prevented government officials, including the Tahsildar, from inspecting the proposed land.
After being informed about the protest, revenue officials and police reached the spot and pacified the agitated residents.
The residents dispersed after revenue officials assured them that the relocation of the outlet would not be carried out on the proposed land.
Road safety and commuter concerns raised
Residents said the identified location was close to an important road stretch used by people from surrounding areas.
“The Ariyakunjur main road is a key stretch that connects big towns nearby. Such an outlet will result in traffic congestion, accidents, and inconvenience for road users,” said N. Sarala, a resident.
Residents also said commuters from at least 20 surrounding villages come to the identified land to board buses.
Their objection centred on the impact they feared the outlet would have on road users, bus commuters and movement along the Ariyakunjur main road.
Tasmac officials said the outlet in Thanda village had been closed recently after complaints from residents.
The proposed relocation therefore drew opposition in Arattavadi even as the earlier outlet in Thanda had already faced complaints from local residents, according to Tasmac officials.
