Women's Reservation and Delimitation Bills Expected to Pass in Monsoon Session

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has announced that the Women's Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill are expected to be passed during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Athawale expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) now has the numbers to push through these critical constitutional amendments.

Women's Reservation Bill to Ensure Seats in 2029 Lok Sabha

Athawale, who leads the Republican Party of India (Athawale), a BJP ally, confirmed that the Women's Reservation Bill would provide quotas for women in legislatures starting with the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The bill, which seeks to increase women's representation, had previously failed to secure the required two-thirds majority during an extended session of Parliament on April 17. At the time, 298 MPs supported the bill, while 230 opposed it, falling short of the 352 votes needed.

The minister attributed the earlier defeat to opposition from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress (TMC). However, he noted that shifting political dynamics—such as support from some TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) members and the DMK's break with the Congress—have strengthened the NDA's position. "We have a two-thirds majority. Women's Reservation Bill and Delimitation Bill will be passed," Athawale asserted.

Delimitation Bill Also on the Agenda

Athawale also emphasized the importance of the Delimitation Bill, which seeks to redraw parliamentary constituencies. "Delimitation is done every 30–35 years. Delimitation is also necessary," he said. The bill aims to address changes in population distribution and ensure equitable representation in the Lok Sabha, a move that could significantly impact the political landscape.

Call for Opposition Support

Athawale appealed to opposition parties, including the Congress, to support the passage of these bills, highlighting their significance for democratic representation and gender equality. With the NDA's current majority, the government appears poised to advance its legislative agenda in the upcoming session.
