Varsha Aglawe makes history as first woman Director General of GSI

In a landmark moment, Varsha Ashok Aglawe has taken charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), becoming the first woman to lead the institution in its 176-year history. The announcement was made by the GSI on Friday, July 31, 2026.

Ms. Aglawe, a seasoned palaeontologist with over 30 years of experience, succeeds Asit Saha, who held the position for two years. She began her career at the Indian Bureau of Mines before joining the GSI in 1992. Most recently, she served as the Additional Director General and Head of Department for the Eastern Region, based in Kolkata.

Focus on Critical Minerals and Advanced Research

Upon assuming her new role, Ms. Aglawe outlined her vision to align the GSI’s programmes with the government’s priorities on critical mineral exploration and mineral security. She emphasized accelerating the search for deep-seated and concealed mineral deposits, expanding offshore mineral exploration, and upgrading laboratory infrastructure.

In addition to mineral exploration, Ms. Aglawe highlighted the importance of promoting advanced geoscientific research, conducting natural hazard studies, and strengthening glaciology initiatives. She also stressed the need for capacity building among young geoscientists and enhancing the quality of scientific publications.
