Tycoon Gordon Wu optimistic about China's future amid stability concerns

Hong Kong property tycoon Gordon Wu Ying-sheung has voiced strong optimism about China’s future, attributing his confidence to the country’s stability and the hardworking nature of its people. Wu shared these remarks after receiving the prestigious Game Changer Award from the Asia Society, which recognized his contributions to China’s development.

Speaking at a fireside chat on Thursday following the award ceremony, the 90-year-old founder and chairman of Hopewell Holdings reflected on his long-standing confidence in China, which he has maintained since the country’s economic opening in 1978. “I am very optimistic about the future of China. Why? Because these are the people who really work hard,” Wu remarked, emphasizing the importance of peace for economic growth.

Wu also highlighted Hong Kong’s unique position under China’s governance, noting the city benefits from both the protection of the mainland and its own common law legal system. “We have the best of two worlds,” he said. Drawing on the ancient Chinese proverb of “turning weapons into jade and silk,” Wu expressed his belief that China’s stability would continue to drive its rise, contrasting this with what he described as the “warmongering tendencies” of the United States, which he argued would hinder its progress.
