Chennai: Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran has underscored the importance of stability in West Asia for India’s economic growth, highlighting the significance of the recently announced US-Iran peace deal. Speaking at the inaugural edition of the CPCL-SOOPER Leadership Lecture Series via a virtual address on Monday, he stated that such an environment is essential for India to sustain rapid growth and accelerate reforms.

Nageswaran pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint, has the potential to disrupt global trade by increasing energy costs, fertilizer prices, and other key imports. He welcomed the peace deal framework, noting its importance for India, which relies heavily on imports of oil, natural gas, and fertilizers. "This is the environment in which India must keep growing fast and keep reforming faster," he remarked during his lecture on the topic, ‘Public Sector Leadership in Shaping India’s Journey to a Developed Nation.’

Emphasizing the need for strategic planning, Nageswaran called for public sector leadership to build reserves across critical commodities beyond crude oil. He also advocated for a stronger focus on nuclear energy, highlighting its immunity to chokepoints and fuel-price volatility. “Nuclear power provides the baseload that a nation of fabs and data centres will need,” he added.

In his address, Nageswaran stressed that India’s position in a multipolar world depends not only on diplomacy but also on industrial capacity and global value chain integration. He stated that countries relying on external sources for energy, minerals, and frontier technologies have limited negotiating power, whereas nations that develop depth in these areas can negotiate from a position of strength. He described this as the essence of self-reliance, with the public sector playing a pivotal role in achieving it.

The Chief Economic Advisor concluded by emphasizing that strategic leverage is built on a nation’s ability to produce, supply, and innovate, ensuring it holds irreplaceable positions in global markets.
