A laptop bag containing valuables was recovered after a Rail Madad complaint prompted checks during which an on-duty Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) noticed a person travelling under suspicious circumstances.

The complaint was filed by Abhishek, who was travelling on Train No. 16585 from Holenarsipur to Mangaluru Junction. He reported that his laptop bag had gone missing from his berth during the journey.

Complaint led to recovery effort

Abhishek suspected that the bag could have gone missing somewhere between Holenarsipur and Sakleshpur. The missing belongings included a Lenovo laptop valued at around ₹80,000, a charger, a gold chain, a wristwatch and identity cards.

During subsequent checks, TTE Chandra Nayak noticed a person travelling on Train No. 17302, the Belagavi-Mysuru train, under suspicious circumstances. The person was detained and handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Outpost at K.R. Nagar.

During the enquiry, the person was identified as Basavaraj. He reportedly admitted to stealing the laptop bag from Train No. 16585 in the section between Holenarsipur and Hassan.

The account places the reported theft on the same train on which Abhishek had been travelling, while the passenger had initially suspected that the bag disappeared between Holenarsipur and Sakleshpur. The recovered belongings were secured after the intervention and follow-up checks.

Case handed over for further action

Basavaraj was subsequently handed over to the Sub-Inspector of the Government Railway Police (GRP), K.R. Nagar, Mysuru, for further investigation and legal action. The recovered belongings were handed over to Abhishek after due verification, according to a press release.

South Western Railway appreciated the alertness and presence of mind shown by TTE Chandra Nayak, saying that his vigilance led to the recovery of the passenger’s belongings. The incident highlights the role of railway staff in responding to a passenger’s complaint and identifying a person considered suspicious during the subsequent checks.

Railway authorities advised passengers to remain vigilant and keep their valuables secure during train journeys. Passengers can report loss, theft or other security-related issues through RailMadad at 139, or approach railway staff or RPF personnel for assistance, the release added.
