Telangana Deputy CM calls for power utilities to prepare for rising demand

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka has directed power utility officials in Telangana to gear up for surging energy demands triggered by drought conditions linked to the El Nino phenomenon. At a review meeting on Saturday, he emphasized the need for an uninterrupted and quality power supply to all consumers and called for a robust action plan to manage the situation effectively under all circumstances.

Focus on Preparedness and Technology

The meeting, attended by senior officials including Special Chief Secretary (Energy) Navin Mittal, Principal Secretary (Finance) Sandeep Kumar Sultania, and heads of key power entities such as Singareni Collieries and SPDCL, highlighted the importance of readiness. The Deputy CM instructed the expansion of the "power ambulance" service—modeled on the 108 emergency system—across the state to address power issues swiftly.

He also praised ongoing efforts to modernize power management, including the installation of GPS tracking in 168 vehicles across 21 circles and the use of a command control center at Erragadda for rapid response. A presentation by SPDCL’s CMD showcased how advanced feeder–DTR–consumer mapping is enabling quicker power restoration, efficient grievance handling, and precise energy audits.

Push for AI and Coal Block Expansion

Mr. Vikramarka urged the integration of Artificial Intelligence and other advanced technologies into power distribution systems to enhance transparency and service efficiency. Additionally, he stressed the urgency for Singareni Collieries to acquire new coal blocks to meet Telangana's growing energy needs. He specifically called for immediate action to secure clearances and begin production at the recently allocated Tadicherla–2 coal block.

The El Nino weather pattern, known for causing droughts and erratic climate conditions, poses significant challenges to power supply in states like Telangana, where energy demand is already high. The Deputy CM’s directives aim to mitigate potential disruptions and ensure a reliable energy supply, which is critical for both residential and industrial consumers. By leveraging technology and ramping up coal production, the state seeks to stay ahead of the curve in addressing these challenges.
