Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the first Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government on August 5, 2026, in the State Assembly. The financial blueprint, under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s leadership, marks a significant moment for the administration following its electoral victory earlier this year.

Key Poll Promises Missing

While some of the TVK’s electoral promises made it to the Budget, several high-profile assurances were notably absent. Proposals such as a ₹2,500 monthly allowance for eligible women heads of families, six free LPG cylinders annually for every household, and free bus travel for women were not included in the announcements. These omissions may spark debates about the government’s ability to deliver on its campaign commitments.

Major Announcements: Welfare and Infrastructure

Among the key initiatives unveiled, the government plans to provide an eight-gram gold coin and a silk saree as part of the ‘Annan Seer’ scheme for eligible brides. Infrastructure upgrades in urban and rural Adi Dravidar areas were also highlighted, alongside the establishment of a new law college in Madurai. Additionally, specialised homes for senior citizens and transgender individuals were announced, reflecting an emphasis on inclusivity and social welfare.

Debt and Borrowing Projections

The Budget revealed that Tamil Nadu’s outstanding debt is projected to reach ₹10.98 lakh crore in the Revised Budget Estimates (RBE) for 2026-27. The debt-to-GSDP ratio is pegged at 27.01%, with plans to borrow ₹1,73,445 crore and repay ₹51,971 crore during the current fiscal year. These figures underscore the fiscal challenges the state faces as it seeks to balance welfare commitments with financial sustainability.

The Road Ahead

This maiden Budget sets the tone for the TVK government’s policy priorities, though the absence of key electoral promises could invite criticism.
