Tamil Nadu legislators seek gender-neutral term for maiden parliamentary speech

Two women legislators from opposing parties have pressed the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker to replace the gendered term kanni pechu — literally "maiden speech" — with a neutral alternative when referring to a lawmaker's first address to the House.

PMK floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani and CPI(M) member Latha jointly raised the issue on Thursday, arguing that the traditional Tamil expression reinforces patriarchal assumptions. Ms. Sowmiya proposed arimuga urai (introductory speech) or mudhal urai (first speech) as gender-neutral substitutes.

Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar invited School Education Minister Rajmohan to weigh in, and the minister said the suggestions "could be considered". He noted that BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan had flagged the same concern previously and that the then Speaker had agreed to examine it.

The intervention marks a rare cross-party consensus on linguistic reform in a House where ideological divides often dominate debate. Kanni carries connotations tied to purity and virginity in Tamil, making its use in parliamentary procedure a symbolic issue for those seeking to strip official language of gendered overtones.

The renewed push also signals continuity: the fact that an earlier BJP legislator raised the matter without resolution suggests institutional inertia, and the current appeal by PMK and CPI(M) members keeps pressure on the Assembly leadership to act.

The Speaker separately announced that Question Hour would resume from Thursday, August 27.
