Tamil Nadu Launches ₹300-Crore Scheme for Adi Dravidar Development

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson on Wednesday announced the launch of the ‘Iyothee Thass Pandithar Habitation Development Scheme’ to uplift Adi Dravidar communities in both urban and rural areas. The ₹300-crore initiative aims to improve basic infrastructure and enhance living standards for these historically marginalised groups.

Focus on Land Ownership and Modern Farming

Presenting the Revised Budget for 2026-27 in the Assembly, Wilson also introduced the ‘Mannin Magal Thittam,’ a scheme designed to enable Adi Dravidar and tribal women agricultural labourers to become landowners. The programme includes training in modern agricultural techniques to boost productivity, with ₹20 crore allocated for its implementation.

Record Allocation for Overseas Education

The government has significantly increased funding for the ‘Annal Ambedkar Overseas Higher Education Scholarship Scheme.’ This year, 362 students pursuing higher education in prestigious international universities will receive up to ₹36 lakh each, with the total allocation reaching a record ₹131 crore.

Entrepreneurship Support and Livelihood Development

To foster economic self-sufficiency, the government will roll out the ‘Vetri Entrepreneur Scheme’ with a ₹75-crore allocation. This initiative aims to support Adi Dravidar and tribal entrepreneurs through capital subsidies and interest subvention. Additionally, the ‘Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme,’ with a budget of ₹165 crore, will provide loans and subsidies to promote entrepreneurship among these communities.

Tribal Development and Infrastructure

The ‘Aandror Membattu Thittam,’ a ₹250-crore scheme, will focus on improving basic amenities in tribal habitations. This includes enhancements in housing, roads, drinking water, streetlights, health infrastructure, and education facilities such as schools and hostels.

Broader Welfare Allocations

Under the Special Components Plan for Adi Dravidars, the government has earmarked ₹25,225 crore, while ₹2,079 crore has been set aside under the Tribal Sub-Plan. The Social Justice Department has received an allocation of ₹3,937 crore, reflecting the State’s commitment to social equity and welfare.
