Tamil Nadu Budget Promises Growth in Textile, Tourism, and Energy Sectors

The Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27 has unveiled targeted initiatives aimed at bolstering the economy and infrastructure of the State's western districts, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Krishnagiri. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson, presenting the maiden Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led government, announced major investments in textiles, renewable energy, and eco-tourism.

Textile Sector Gets a Green Push

Tiruppur, a globally recognized garment-exporting hub, will see phased upgrades to its infrastructure to support environmentally sustainable textile production. A Tiruppur Textiles Technology Centre (TTTC) will be established with a ₹10 crore budget to lead this transformation. Additionally, a ₹60 crore design institute will be set up with industry and academic collaboration to advance technical textiles, a sector still in its nascent stage in Tamil Nadu. The Technical Textiles Transformation Scheme will provide MSMEs and textile manufacturers with international exposure, technical training, and innovation support.

Renewable Energy Projects to Expand

In a significant boost to the energy sector, the Coimbatore-Ariyalur 765 kV Transmission Line Project will be implemented under a public-private partnership at a cost of ₹4,000 crore. The Phase-II Green Energy Corridor Project, valued at ₹1,187 crore, and the Virudhunagar-Coimbatore 765 kV Transmission Project, worth ₹1,640 crore, will be expedited to facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy from southern Tamil Nadu. These projects are expected to strengthen the State’s power infrastructure and support its green energy goals.

Tourism and Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation

The government has announced the Tamil Nadu Eco-Tourism Mission to develop nature-based tourism circuits across the State, including trekking routes, wildlife safaris, and eco-friendly accommodations. The Cauvery river, from Hogenakkal to Srirangam, will be included in a ₹53-crore proposal to promote river tourism.

Addressing human-wildlife conflicts, ₹20 crore has been allocated for scientific measures such as solar fences, steel wire rope fencing, and GPS-enabled vehicles for conflict management. This scheme will cover 100 conflict-prone villages across western districts like Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, and the Nilgiris, among others.

Social Welfare and Education

Salem is among five districts where institutions for persons with intellectual disabilities, named ‘Nambikkai Illam,’ will be established. With a total outlay of ₹4 crore, these centers will offer special education, early intervention services, and vocational training for children aged three years and above. Initially functioning as day schools for 50 students, the institutions will later include residential facilities.
